The new MG 07 gathered its first 10,000 orders in just 1 minute and 57 seconds after sales began. In other words, while you are opening the bank app, recalling your password, and trying to figure out where the confirmation button went this time, the Chinese have already bought ten thousand cars. For MG, this is an absolute record. The previous champion—the MG4—required nearly 40 minutes to reach 10,000 orders. However, there is no need to search for the reasons behind the frenzy. In China, the MG 07 costs approximately 1.3–2 million rubles. For that price, the buyer is offered a nearly five-meter long vehicle, measuring 4886 mm, that looks as if a Porsche Taycan and a Xiaomi SU7 met up at a bar one evening.

The MG manager had to defend himself against accusations of copying. But the customers couldn’t care less. In the first day alone, MG received about 45,000 orders, forcing the company to consider increasing its production capacity. It doesn’t matter who copied whose headlights. Because MG essentially offers the look of an expensive sport sedan at a mass-market price. Depending on the version, it includes active suspension, comfortable seating, a panoramic roof with adjustable opacity, and a multimedia system featuring a 15.6-inch screen and 21 speakers. Not long ago, cars with a similar set of features were accompanied by a salesperson in the showroom who would drop to a whisper to offer coffee from a porcelain cup.

Certainly, the comparison to the Porsche Taycan is quite conditional. MG isn’t trying to be Porsche in terms of engineering, brand, or status. Instead, it leverages the key trend in recent Chinese automotive super-trends: offering the consumer a visually expensive car, a massive screen, significant power, and substantial range—then setting a price that makes a European CFO start nervously smoking. This strategy is working brilliantly so far. The Chinese buyer looked at the design debates, looked at the price—and decided that figuring out who the MG 07 resembles can wait until after the car is delivered.
