Historical Overview

The Sailing Bridge spans the Obvodny Canal in Kronstadt, located in the city center.
The bridge was constructed in 1902 and underwent a major overhaul in 1935. In 2009, the bridge received a major restoration, including the replacement of metal structures most damaged by corrosion and the restoration of cantilever trusses. The wooden structure of the pedestrian walkway was replaced with a metal slab and finished with poured asphalt concrete.
The bridge you can cross today was designed in 1932 by engineers Stepanov and Shepelevsky. However, the structure originated from the initiative of the workers in Shop No. 50 of the Kronstadt Naval Plant. They proposed the reconstruction of the bridge.
This is an example of how ordinary laborers directly influenced urban infrastructure during the Soviet era.
