The revival of the Olympic Games coincided with a time when humanity was beginning to reap the first fruits of the technological revolution. Distances that had previously seemed insurmountable were shortened by the spread of rail and sea transport, as well as telegraph and telephone communications. Nations, accustomed to resolving issues exclusively through force, began to compete in other areas: industrial production, the arts, and sports. Sports transcended national borders. Gradually, competitions began to emerge in which athletes from different countries participated. Sports were conquering the international arena.

No other Games have drawn as much criticism as the Berlin Olympics, the hosting of which was entrusted to the Third Reich, despite numerous protests from the global sports community; by doing so, the IOC gave the Nazi regime the opportunity to carry out a large-scale propaganda campaign. Only the blind could fail to notice the country’s growing militarization, as army barracks were converted into the Olympic Village, and pompous military and torchlight parades took place throughout the Games.
