The project is dedicated to five alternative film posters of Hungarian cinema for a competition organized by Budapest Metropolitan University and the HSE School of Art and Design. I chose five films: «On body and soul» (2017), «White palms» (2006), «Larry» (2022), «Wild Roots» (2021), «Explanation for Everything» (2023).
On body and soul
A woman’s faint footprints and a man’s, accustomed to his solitude. Between them lies a distance that two people find difficult to bridge, and the only space where they can exist side by side is in winter sleep.
White palms
The poster shows only the boy’s hand—open, lying on the floor, and covered in wounds. It asks for nothing and offers no resistance; rather, it illustrates the boy’s vulnerability in the face of the system.
Larry
Adam stands in front of a solid fence: it’s as if he’s stuck on this side, not yet having crossed the boundary of his environment. He tries to speak up quietly, and already, beyond the barrier in the blue sky, his nickname «Larry» is taking shape as a single, trembling word: it is his voice, which has broken through farther and higher than he himself has.
Wild Roots
This is the story of a father and daughter who have become a single, compact, dark mass in a beam of light amid an impersonal, cold system. The poster depicts their place in the world: two living figures, confined and illuminated, as an exception.
Explanation for Everything
A small national emblem, acting as a catalyst for the scandal, tears the school exam paper in half. On one side of the tear remains the name Ábel; on the other, an empty space for a grade, as if politics and the «grading» system were literally tearing a living person apart between who he is and the label they want to pin on him. His relationship with his girlfriend also comes under fire.
In this series of alternative posters, I kept visual clutter to a minimum and focused primarily on the film’s emotional impact, the characters’ states of mind, and the film’s tone.
