The project is taking part in the competition

As part of the its x competition, the Niu Vshe School of Design created three series of alternative posters for Indonesian films: Kuyang (2024) Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (2002) Laskar Pelangi (2008)

Kuyang

The film’s story revolves around the mythical creature Kuyang, a spirit that, according to Indonesian faith, is a flying female head with entrails that hunts pregnant women and babies.

Posters for the Kuyang film convey a sense of chaos and fear through distorted faces and scratched printing. Distorted, placed on each other symbolizes the loss of identity and the transformation into a creature that no longer belongs to itself. On the second poster, «The devil’s gratest rick is when you believe he doesn’t exist», the movie’s main message is that the real evil hides in the shadows until it’s too late.

Ada Apa dengan Cinta?

The film describes a popular high school girl, Chinta, who falls in love with a closed, mysterious Ranggu despite the differences in their worlds. Their connection grows through poetry and deep understanding, but faces obstacles — friendship, social pressure, and personal fears. The film reveals the first love, choice, and maturity.

The first poster reflects the sensitive and melancholic atmosphere of the film. A handwritten typeface gives a sense of sincerity and warmth, as if the name was written in the heroine’s personal diary. The second poster contrasts with the first, reminding me of a bright, bold collage in the spirit of street art. Fractured elements and bright colors transmit the youth riot and the search for themselves. Together, these posters show two sides of history: gentle romance and the daring energy of youth.

Laskar Pelangi

«Laskar Pelangi» is an inspiring story about a group of poor rural children from Belitung who are studying in a small, semi-destructive school. Under the guidance of dedicated teachers, they overcome difficulties by maintaining their dreams and faith in education, despite poverty and injustice.

Each poster reflects different aspects of the film, ranging from child innocence to the struggle for knowledge and dreams. The names of heroes, written by different coloured chalk, represent the diversity of their personalities and aspirations. An important feature of the posters is the image of radio, which appears repeatedly in the film as a symbol of children’s freedom, hope, and dreams.
