A Garment with a Secret
The Costume with a Secret. A women’s clothing collection based on practices of unconventional construction.
The diploma collection is based on an investigation of unconventional vestimentary practices employed by thieves, smugglers, and other resourceful women of the 19th and 20th centuries. This phenomenon serves as an allegory for female agency: clothing, equipped with elements cleverly devised for theft, grants women the power to push the boundaries of the accessible and redefine hierarchical and gendered structures of power. The central target of the heroine is not an object, but the very idea of freedom of choice, realized through the tools of costume design. The engineering aesthetic of the thief’s attire—which externally creates the illusion of conformity—becomes the primary reference and source of inspiration.
