Eric Kandel is an American psychiatrist, awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his research on learning and memory. You might know him as the author of the book In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind.
He proved that changes in the activity of the synapse are fundamental in the mechanism of memory and learning. A synapse is a point of contact between two neurons, which serves to transmit a nerve impulse between two cells.
For the design of the Kandel exhibition, a modular font was developed suitable for Latin and Cyrillic alphabet. The elements in the font mimic synapses stretching in some direction.
