Inspired by Dziga Vertov’s iconic film The Man with a Movie Camera (1929), I directed Woman with a Movie Camera. This film has been dedicated to Elizaveta Svilova, editor of The Man with a Movie Camera, an esteemed member of The Council of Three (along with Vertov and Mikhail Kaufman). I have attempted to capture the spirit of Bangladesh as a country, which was born in 1971 from the blood and sacrifices of her people. Essentially, this film portrays the multidimensional diversities of this region which was historically an ethnic melting pot, unifying people of different ethnicities, casts, religions, cultures and traditions. This short 3 minute-long video portrays the people and places of Bangladesh, aiming to uphold the fundamental principles of state policy as presented in the Constitution of Bangladesh adopted in 1972 — nationalism, socialism, democracy and secularism. This film showcases the capital city Dhaka, as well as the areas of Savar, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Jashore, Khulna, Chittagong, Teknaf, Rangamati, Cox’s Bazar, Habiganj, Sylhet, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Barisal, and Chapainawabganj; encompassing rural and urban contexts of people from all walks of life.
