Anatomy is one of the oldest sciences. Although interest in anatomy has always been, for a long time the human body has remained a real mystery for scientists. Because of religious beliefs and superstitions, doctors encountered obstacles in studying the subject without the possibility of autopsies. Anatomy as science began to flourish in the 14th century, when in 1315 the first officially authorized autopsy was carried out since antiquity, marking the return of this practice to educational institutions.

This book is a visual study aimed at analysing the artistic techniques used in the medical literature of the fourteenth to nineteenth centuries, from the first official autopsy of a human being in 1315 to the introduction of X-rays in 1895, which allowed the study of the human body to be carried out not by invasive methods. The work examined the anatomical atlases of Europe, East and Asia, as well as the key figures and events of the period.

The book contains three chapters, each of which symbolizes the «layer» of the human body.
