LOCATION-Meerut is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is an ancient city with settlements dating back to the Indus valley civilization having been found in and around the area. the city lies 70kilometre northeast of the national capital New Delhi, and 453 km northwest of the state capital Lucknow. The area of the todays Meerut is 2590sq.km, 662 villages and 86,55% people mostly spoke Hindi language.
HISTORY-The origin of the Meerut can be traced back to 273BC, following which, the city has gone through a transition from the ancient era of MAHABHARATA, The ASHOKA times, The GURJAR times and finally, the British occupation in Meerut and rest of India. BRITISH EMPIRE-From Meerut, The Meerut mutiny 9may1857 was the start of 1857 Revolt. KADAM SINGH was in charge. Indian sepoys assassinated British officers and broke loose the jail. HASTINAPUR-The Hastinapur has mysterious, historical and huge history in the Meerut. Meerut is known as the gateway to Hastinapur. It was the seat of power for both the Kauravas and Pandavas. NAUCHANDI FAIR — It was started in 1672 AD as a one-day affair mainly for cattle traders. It is a rare symbol of communal harmony with visitors to both the Hindu and Muslim shrines. KAWAD YATRA — It Is an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva known as Kanvarias. CULTURE AND RITUALS — Culture of Meerut- folk dance and music is part of the culture.
